We run a Music Programme for all classes during school hours in partnership with the Churchtown School of Music. In September 2018 we commenced our seventh year of this very successful programme. Classes take place as follows:
- Junior and Senior Infant classes take Mini Music lessons. Mini Music is a fun, action-packed music class, focusing on singing and the playing of percussion instruments.
- First to Fourth classes learn the violin.
- Fifth and Sixth classes learn the guitar.
Classes take place once a week for between 30-40 minutes depending on the class and run from September to April. The programme finishes each year with a concert to allow the children to demonstrate all they have learned during the year. During the 2015/2016 school year we set up a school orchestra for the first time. The orchestra meets before school at 8 am on Tuesday mornings with our music teachers.
Green Schools' Programme
In 2004 we were awarded our first Green Flag in recognition of our effort to "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle" and since then Our Lady's has had a very active Green Schools' Committee working hard to keep us aware of environmental issues. We've studied water and how to conserve it, we've encouraged our school community to "Walk on Wednesdays" and in May 2015 we achieved our sixth Green Flag for our study of Biodiversity. We have been working hard over the past few years on the topics of Global Citizenship and Climate Change and in March 2018 we achieved our seventh Green Flag! Very well done to all involved and long may the hard work continue!
Each year our Sixth Class are given the opportunity to participate in a Public Speaking Competition. Each girl picks a topic of her choice, researches it and acquires the skills involved in making a presentation.
Active School Flag Programme
Active School Flag (ASF) is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland. In early 2018, we embarked on the ASF Programme, with a view to being awarded our very first Active School Flag in May 2020. The ASF is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school. In order to achieve the flag, we will have to say 'yes' to approximately 40 'success criteria'. In order to achieve this, we are currently self-evaluating every aspect of our P.E. Programme along with organising an Active School Week each year.
Games Promotion Officers from St. John's G.A.A. Club in Ballinteer give weekly Gaelic Football and Camogie lessons (depending on the time of year) during school hours. Each class gets a block of lessons.
Each June we participate in the Cumann na mBunscol Athletics Finals in Santry.
Two classes each year are given an opportunity to participate in approximately seven swimming lessons, as part of their P.E. Programme, in Meadowbrook DLR Swimming Pool.
Community Rugby Officers from Leinster Rugby have been delivering blocks of tag-rugby lessons to 5th and 6th Classes since 2018, along with providing opportunities for the children to participate in tag-rugby blitzes with other schools.
Our Lady's initiated a partnership with the F.A.I. in May 2019 and now avail of soccer sessions with an F.A.I. Development Officer, along with coaching support for our school's first ever soccer team.
'Cycling Safety' delivers a ten week cycling safety training programme to a designated class in our school each year. They provide the children with the skills and knowledge required to be better, safer cyclists. We endeavour to ensure that each child avails of this opportunity during her time in our school.
After School Sports
We offer the following after school sports to various classes: Gaelic Football, Camogie, Basketball, Soccer and Table Tennis, coached by both dedicated school teachers and specialist outside coaches. The children train after school and participate in the relevant leagues and competitions.
After School Spanish Lessons
We offer after school Spanish lessons to pupils from Junior Infants to Sixth Class. These classes are fun and interactive and are taught by a native Spanish speaker.
The following after school activities are available to pupils through our school:
